The island of Favignana
Favignana, the Aegadian Island surrounded by idyllic landscapes, is rich with coasts, caves and gulfs with crystal clear water and stunning seabeds.
In ancient times, the name of Favignana was "Aegusa", while the current name comes from the wind name Foehn ("Favonio" in italian), a warm wind from the west, which makes the climate very mild. The island has a mountainous part, characterized by Mount Santa Catarina while on the southern side there are the islets of Previto, Galera and Galeotta.
Favignana has some traces of prehistoric human settlements: it is mentioned by Thucydides as the site of a phoenician settlement and also keeps the remains of an early Christian cemetery. In 1081 the Normans built there a village and mighty fortifications so in 1874 the island belonged to the Florio who built the impressive plants, which still exist today, transformed into a prestigious museum that highlights the largest European fishing industry regarding the processing of tuna, fished according to ancient Arab technique of the "mattanza" (slaughtering), which took place until a few years ago in Favignana, in the period between May and June. Favignana, also famous for its tuff quarries, is located approximately 10 miles from Trapani, in front of the islands of the "Stagnone" of Marsala and Trapani-Birgi Airport. It covers an area of about 19 sq. km., and a coastline of 33 km, in a beautiful landscape, rich with coves and caves.
Among the most beautiful bays of the island stand out: "Cala Rossa", "Cala Azzurra", "Scalo Cavallo", "Grotta Perciata", "Bue Marino" (wild and particularly suitable for those who love to dive, as well as preferred habitat by monk seals), "Cala Rotonda", "Punta Faraglione" and finally, the white sand beach "Lido Burrone", a beautiful bay, which, with all its comfort, meets all the needs of the bather.
Lido Burrone is located just 600 meters from Village Egad Camping, and it is easily accessible by all means and can be easily reached on foot in 10 minutes. A local bus service connects the Village Egad Camping to the city (1.5 km) from where other lines are bringing in various areas of the island.
